Triclosan (TCS) is a man-made antimicrobial substance often found in self care products, household goods and industrial uses. Its widespread application and durability in the environment over the last twenty years have resulted in its designation as a significant emerging contaminant. Aquatic organism, especially fishes are known to have a vulnerable to lethal impact of TCS. In the present study, the L. rohita fish was exposed to acute toxicity doses of TCS, after which behavioural and histological alterations were assessed. Physico-chemical properties were also monitored throughout the experiment. The behavioral analysis conducted during the experiment revealed concentration-dependent alterations in fish behavior following TCS exposure, including increased erratic swimming, respiratory distress, air gulping, lethargic movement, excessive mucus secretion, etc. The behavioural irregularities, displayed a positive correlation with concentrations of TCS and were time linked. Histological finding include aneurysm, epithelial uplifting, curling and disruption of secondary gill lamella, necrosis, tissue vacuolization and degeneration in liver and congestion, degeneration of renal tubule and glomerulus, in kidney of L. rohita. Thus, the present study highlights the critical risks possessed by acute doses of TCS to aquatic organism at behavioural and organ level.
