Abstract

Climate change is increasingly affecting agricultural production through rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, heat stress, water scarcity and changing pest and disease pressure. These effects influence crop growth, yield, quality, farm income and food security, with rainfed and resource-constrained farming systems being particularly vulnerable. Evidence from India indicates that major crops such as wheat, rice and maize may experience substantial yield losses under increasing temperature and water stress. However, the magnitude of impact varies with crop, location, irrigation and management practices. Climate-resilient cultivars, adjusted sowing dates, efficient irrigation, groundwater conservation, crop diversification, agroforestry and improved weather information can reduce climatic risks. Building resilient agricultural systems therefore requires an integrated approach combining scientific knowledge, efficient resource management, ecosystem conservation, farmer capacity building and supportive policies.
