Abstract

Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) have emerged as an important institutional mechanism for improving market access and strengthening the bargaining power of small and marginal farmers. Effective market linkages enable producers to access inputs, market information, credit facilities and remunerative markets, thereby enhancing farm profitability and reducing transaction costs. This short communication discusses the conceptual framework of market linkages and highlights the role of FPOs in promoting collective marketing, value chain integration, price realization, risk mitigation and access to institutional support. It also outlines the major challenges affecting the sustainability of FPOs, including governance issues, managerial limitations and market constraints. Strengthening institutional support, capacity building and policy interventions can further enhance the effectiveness of FPOs in achieving inclusive agricultural growth and sustainable rural development.
