Abstract

As beneficial soil microorganism, Streptomyces species are widely recognized for their ability to biosynthesize a wide variety of antibiotics and bioactive compounds. These naturally occurring substances suppress detrimental bacterial and fungal pathogens through the impairment of essential physiological processes and also utilized in entomological research primarily to manipulate, study and eliminate insect gut microbiomes. Streptomyces derived antibiotics contain very potent and diverse kinds of antimicrobial activities and thus are very useful for agricultural applications. In addition to their antimicrobial functions, these microbes contribute to plant vigor and improved health. Streptomyces therefore are a rich source of environment friendly plant protection products that can be utilized for enhancing agricultural sustainability in the long run.
